Default **** Poor Performance...

hey - I know you officionados out there swear by your 6spds - ok. But a bunch of us have tips.
I chipped and DiPP'd my '03 AR 3 months ago.
This past weekend while humming along 95S to NC from DC, every time I'd get on the gas, the RPM's would surge from 3000 to 4800 before anything happened...then it would engage and off I'd go quickly. That sloppy tranny/clutch what's up with that?? I found that if I downshifted 5 to 4 in Tip mode, the car would respond instantly.
I was told that the turbo pressure has to build, then surges....then the computer catches up on the thinking and responds....a day late for the lane changing I was having fun doing. That got pretty hairy too close to some big boys with lots of wheels and tonnage...
So I became a 5 to 4 to 5 shifter constantly. A bunch of high end cars all doing over 85 for like 150 miles - sweet! great fun!

I am not impressed with the pressure build of the GIAC DiPP flash to my engine - can one of you totally into-it guys explain this to me? Is there a solution?
I feel the backpressure building in 5th, then pop goes the weezle - mega rpms, no power, then zoom. It sucks man!
I tried driving with great finesse to no avail. Shifting was the only thing that built up the turbo pressure but when I got on the gas then in 4th, it would downshift down into 3rd!! at 85! that don't make no sense.

I humbly ask for your comments and advice.

What else have you modified? Bypass valves or air intake to get better flow? Don't forget, IF you want better response on the throttle you'll have to do the whole nine yards. An Engine and Tip chip will help to get you on your way, but it is by far just a beginning.
The best way is to calculate the power to weight ratio; you'll easy find out that with the weight of the ar you'll need about 410WHP/430FT to be really competitive. And that may cost up to 10K.
So the poor High-Rev power could be explained by missing perfomance pieces.
Considering your post it seems you were able to keep up over 150 miles, so it can't be that bad.
Even today, with all the mods I'll have to shift down into 4th (tip) to catch up with other guys.
Furthermore, I would guess that the tranny's 5th gear may have something to do with it. European models for example can reach about 145MPH but it takes time to get there. Only with proper tuning
you'll be able to gain "push-power" over 4500RPM.

If you are around NJ I'll be glad to leave you my ar for a test drive and you'll see that even with all the mods it still is not perfect over 4500RPM.

Don't be upset about it, we drive a Tank with Figther Plane ambitions.

Default Do you hear any hissing noise while stepping on the gas? Might be bad DVs as Dr.quattro suggested

I don't know what else to attribute the lack of acceleration combined with the increase in RPMs to. I mean, if you had a stick, i would say your clutch is worn out, but with a tip...? Maybe someone else will chime in with another idea.

Default Solution at hand...

Similar probelm at 4-5K when heavy footed.. I went into safe mode fo seconds.. becasue my 710N valves were crap... Switched to the Black Forge 007 version on spring #2 and it never happend again.
Pluss the power delivery was great improved..smoooooother.

I imagine a similar result with a tiop trans...also did you do the VAG recode? Search for it, I don;w know what the code is but others on a6 think is enhances the TIP CHIP.

Default i second dr quattor

the stock diverter valve is known to get sticky after a while. it slowly robs performance, until something like what you say happens. it may not be it, but it could be. a nice new Blow off Valve or dv is about 130 bucks and you can install it easily. its worth doing regardless. start cheap work your way up

Default Do you have a tip chip? If not that is your bigiest problem. Even with that when

I really want to drive aggressive I go to manual tip mode and it is way better than having the computer decide what gear and rpm to be in!

Default Re: Solution at hand...

I GIAC flashed and tip chipped. Of course I H-sported a while ago...but that's got nothing to do with this.
Interesting comments on the boost leak - no I haven't heard any un-natural noises, but tomorrow, I have a good highway bit, I'll open up as permitted, with a key ear.
Also don't know anything about Black Forge 007...will look into it.

Yet again today - DC traffic, 3700-4200 rpms, in Drive, get on it, turbo lag, engine rev to 5000, trainy searches...then accelerates...pretty frustrating after drop all that cash into the flash.

Will investigate tomorrow - thanks!

Default It sounds like it probably is a DV, you might want to look into

the 06A 145 710 N (better than our stock DV but still OEM) for less than $35/each and see if that solves your problems before you drop $135/each (don't forget you need two). You can get the 710 N at your local Audi/VW dealership or order online. Hope this helps.
