Default Transmission Problems

Hi,
a mechanic just told me that my 01 allroad needs a new transmission after exploring an issue i had which didn't allow me to go in reverse. cost estimated at $6000 and told me that it was an all or nothing type of repair.

After reading some blogs, it seems this is a recurring issue on this year/model and one person actually found the problem to a switch malfunction in the transmission only costing $145. Has anyone else encountered this problem and managed to solve it in a way other than replacing the whole transmission?

For me this repair would outweigh the cost of the vehicle, and although i love it in most all other ways, would have to try to sell it. Any advice/information would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anyone have any advice on replacing the interior rear view mirror for less than $320?

Thanks a lot.

K.

Default what kind of mechanic did you see?

How did he determine that it was the entire tranny and not another issue?

It sounds like you need a shop that specilaizes in ZF Transmissions.

Paulroad,

i went to a local shop that specialize in audi's, vw's. i think the guys used to work for the local audi dealer. they weren't that clear on the specifics of what was wrong with the transmission though, just saying that it was usually best to replace it rather than try to piece things out.
Incidently, as i'm not so mechanic-minded, what is a ZF transmission?
Thanks again.

Default Can you describe your problem in more detail? When you put it in Reverse

does it show that it is in Reverse in the instrument cluster? So the R should be lit up.

It could just be a bad multi-function switch and not the entire trans.

Default what is a ZF transmission? This is the manufacturer of the auto tranny.

If you find a tranny shop that specializes in ZF you may solve your issues for far less $$.

Many shops, especially dealers, don't really do tranny work. They know how to remove it and replace it, not fix it.

ZF SHOP SPECIALIST

yes, it does register graphically as being in R(everse) on the cluster. i think i will need to get a more clear second opinion from a transmission shop.
thank you for your reply.

Best,

k.

Default Re: Transmission Problems

When my tranny died, I researched options and while 6k sounds right for a replacement, you should be able to get a rebuild of your existing tranny for half that cost.

Mine died at 40k...
