A clunk from the steering rack? (!)
Hi,
I have a '94 S4 with 104k miles and I have a clunk noise that occurs at low speeds when the wheel is turned slightly to the left or to the right. It produces a small feeling through the steering wheel, as if it's hitting something. The clunk occurs at one point just when the wheel is off-center and then it moves smoothly without hindrance. When the car is moving at anything above 5 mph the clunk is non-existent. It doesn't affect drivability one bit and is more worrisome than a problem.
I can't really diagnose the problem and neither could an Audi mechanic I consulted, it doesn't appear that the steering rack is hitting anything but maybe there's something I'm not looking for.
Anyone have any ideas as to what may be afflicting my S4 and if it's something I should be immediately worried about?
Thanks so much for your help.
