Should my coolant boil?

after a couple minutes the level would go back to normal, mechanic said he's seen it

happen before, said the pump spins so fast the coolant cavites

Yes, that is the one that turns on the fan while the car is running. The one that turns on the after-run pump is located under the intake manifold screwed into the water manifold (the smaller one of the two that is closer to the radiator).

Update - on further investigation I found the screw on cap on the coolant reservoir to be doing it's job poorly, so I'm pretty sure that's the culprit. I can't even tighten it, when I turn it tighter it'll keep snapping loose again. This is a new reservoir (and cap) to replace the old one which was broken, but I guess it's crap. Now I need to find a new cap (and possibly reservoir too).
