Default Two of my other cars don't/never had airbags.

I'm not too concerened about driving them. If I was about to crash, I think in those split seconds before impact, I'd be squinting and thinking, "Oh my God, the Aibag is about go off."

Default Hey the airbag was supposed to expire after 10 years and then Audi gave it another five...

so either my airbag is already expired or it expires in two years... either way I don't trust it. My brakes work because I have changed the pads, rotors and fluid. My steering works because I have changed the tie rods and replaced the hydraulic fluid. What have I done for my airbag? Nada.

Default I take care of trauma patients every day...

Those in decent autos with seatbelts and airbags - are frequently minimally injured. Seatbelts do pretty well on there own - but the airbag helps lots! While looking for a 2nd s-car I passed up a cherry '92 (converted sport wheel - w/ air bag) because of the lack of a passenger bag.
I'd never have an airbagless car as my daily driver.
just 2 cents

Default Well you make a good point. Maybe Audi should add..

regular airbag servicing in the maintenance schedule! A check up after 5 years, replace after 10-15.... that'll be good for a $1500 visit don't ya think ; )

Default Uhhhhh... they do. According to Audi the airbag is supposed to be replaced after 15 years.

The original replacement interval was 10 years, but they extended it to 15 years. Ever read the sticker on your passenger sun visor? According to my sticker the airbag expired in 2001, but Audi says not to replace it until 2006. I'm leaning towards the sticker.

Default

With that logic, you can not trust any part of your car that has never been serviced...

Default Would you trust brakes that had never been serviced in 13 years?

I highly doubt it. I'd trust a fender or a trunklid that had never been serviced but not brakes or any other item critical to my safety. EVEN AUDI SAYS THE AIRBAG NEEDS TO BE REPLACED! See below.

Default aren't aribags pointless unless you sit with your face in your wheel anyways?

BTW, if you sit that close, you look stupid too. I know I sit at almost full arm's length away. When I got hit head-on in my 91 GTi, I was not even close to hitting my steering wheel and I didn't have any airbags. Yes, I had a little bit of whiplash, but don't know if airbags would have helped or hurt.

It's the little people in this world that sit WAAAAY too close to their steering wheels that get me worried. First of all, you look unsafe driving at all and make me worried to be near you. And second, you're probably paranoid all the time, making funny noises with your mouth every time you drive. You also stick your tongue out of your mouth when you make sharp turns. Backing up is a joke. Why do you have to sit so close? Are you driving with your elbows?

Default Like it says in my sig, I don't own a 4rings yet.

Hence no Audi with an airbag. My Passat is a 91 and doesn't have airbags either.
