Just Listening In
I've read this whole post, not understanding a whole lot but pretty much understanding what you guys are talking about. I just bought a 2000 A6 2.7t without the Bose(pretty sure it doesnt have becuase i havent seen those words written on the speaker grille) and with the Symphony HU. I had a 97 mazda millenia with 4 Polk db components(5.25 front, 6.5 rear) connected to the Infinity 7541a amp with 2 12' Kicker Comp C12s hooked up to a Kicker KX350.4, all of this was controlled by a Sony MDX HU. I left the headunit and speakers in the old car but took both amps and the box. I want to reinstall my box with my amp but im planning on later on replacing my HU with sumthin like the Eclipse AVN5435. My questions are these
1. Should i wait to get the new HU before i install the amp and subs?
2. What speakers should i be looking into?(keep in mind the Infinity amp is 100 watts RMS x 4ohms)
3. How hard is the install?(i did everything on the Mazda by myself except for the HU, can i pull this off?)
4. You said there are outs on the OEM HU, will this allow me to adaquately control the subs?
5. The two Polk Db rear crossovers have gone bad, the last time this happened the amp was also bad, is there any way to test my amp to see if its good or not?

"1. Should i wait to get the new HU before i install the amp and subs?"
Not neccesarily. But I'd consider an RNS-E before I considered the Eclipse. I sell Eclipse and I prefer the look of the RNS-E. If you want an Eclipse get the 6600.
"2. What speakers should i be looking into?(keep in mind the Infinity amp is 100 watts RMS x 4ohms)"
DLS UP6 are our favorite. Morel Dotech 6 are good too. Lower cost speaks are CDT.
"3. How hard is the install?(i did everything on the Mazda by myself except for the HU, can i pull this off?)"
Hard to say since I don't know your abilities. BUt there's lots of good info here. The HU is definitely not a DIY deal unless you are good with body work.
"4. You said there are outs on the OEM HU, will this allow me to adaquately control the subs?"
If you install rear fill, besides ruining your stereo imaging and pulling your stage aft, you will need to get a bass **** to directly control the bass output. Many amps have a bass **** or optional bass ****.
"5. The two Polk Db rear crossovers have gone bad, the last time this happened the amp was also bad, is there any way to test my amp to see if its good or not?"
May I suggest that if your xovers keep going out you have a badly-designed amp?

DLS Ref is better than Ed
The DLS Classic is more comparable to the Ed than the Reference - the Reference is better sounding with better input circuitry component quality. If you decide to get a reference let me know...

Re: Just Listening In
Thanks for the answers to the questions. the first time the crossovers went bad they were connected to a power acoustik amp this time they were connected to the infinity, what i dont get is that the rear speakers handle the same rms as the fronts but with a higher peak(200 front 300 rear) and thru all this the fronts never went bad while this is the second time the rears have gone out. Where can i see some of these speakers your talking about and where can i buy and install them in the NY(5 borough area)?
