Interesting spot where factory XM box is located.
So I'm starting to take out my factory XM to get ready for my aftermarket install, and where I thought the unit was from factory installation is not where it really is... sort of.
In the left rear hatch area within the trunk is a pop-out panel. Behind that panel is... nothing. This is why people who have tried to mount their factory satellite unit on their own have thought they'd need brackets and couldn't find them for sale anywhere. It's because that's NOT where AUDI mounts it!
The unit actually slides right in to a pre-fab holder ABOVE the plastic pop-out panel compartment. You have to unscrew 4 bolts and remove the entire left side black plastic housing that the pop-out panel comes from. The unit just clicks right in to slots. The area behind that pop-out panel is empty. Guess that's left for CD-changer or whatnot, even though you can't use a CD-changer and factory XM together. Another thing I found interesting is that the XM unit is really small.
BTW- Boilermakerfan, if you see this and are interested in the XM unit still, email me. I should have it all out and ready to ship by the middle of next week... and to anyone else, if you might be interested in the symphony head unit or any factory front door speakers, send me an email or it goes on eBay. Send me one if you want the factory XM unit, too, in case boilermakerfan falls through.
NOTE that my email is wasson1@verizon.net NOT what you click on from this forum.

Of course I saw it! ;-)
I'm still interested, but it's a bad time for me. To all the other peeps here, if your interested in Lee's tuner and have the cash, email Lee and buy it. I'm not going to lead Lee on and have him drag this on.
Lee, I appreciate you giving me dibs and I will stay in touch in case know one else jumps on this...

OK then, thanks for the email, too. Up for grabs: Factory XM, Symphony II, and Fr Door speakers..
If anyone wants it or the Symphony II head unit or the front door speakers, email me

We'll talk... It's all from a 2004.5 A4. All barely 2 months old.

Re: Interesting spot where factory XM box is located.
Thanks for the post. One quick question: I can't find the 4 bolts in my '05 A4. Are they located behind the felt siding in the trunk, or are they visible within the pop-out panel? I've searched high and low, but can't find them.
Thanks!
Thanks!
