Trying to figure out what made this pattern on my paint.
Bought my '02 A4 1.8t 5spd a few months ago from a private seller, and on the hood, roof and trunk lid is this pattern that I can only describe as the results of a bad Vinyl job, the pics are the best I could get given the light I had. Any ideas?

That's truly bizarre. Could the car have been covered with decals prior to your purchase?
I'd give strong consideration to visiting your local pro detailer for guidance and/or correction.

It's possible, I have no idea though. I have a scratch remover that seemed to diminish the pattern in a small spot. I want to just take a saturday and work on it but it may require a whole weekend.

It looks like it was covered with a plastic sheet, condensation formed and it stuck to the paint.
Try some polishing compound to see if it clears up.

My father's '04 A6 has the exact same issue. After talking to a variety of people ranging from Audi dealers to detailers to body shops, I suspect this is the result of the plastic wrap Audi used to apply to the cars to protect them while in transit (they now use complete covers instead of the wrap). The wraps had a removable adhesive on them and I suspect that has something to do with the clear coat deterioration.
The only solution that worked long-term on my dad's car was to color sand the affected areas. It still shows a little but it's about 80% gone now. In certain light you can easily see the defect but for an older car it's not a huge deal. Other than that, refinishing would be your only option.

on my rear "spoiler" i have a similar type of defect. mine looks to be caused from a peice of tape running acrossed it. possibly due to masking off the hatch. id have to guess it was from some sort of adhesive. i havent tried to buff mine out yet. but it will definatly take some work. i will get back to you on what it takes

I agree it looks like it had some sort of cover or plastic sheet on it. I use mcguires cleaning wax, supposed to remove oxidation and stuff. I just tried applying it with a small buffer/polisher and it really helped my finish, so maybe give something like that a shot.
