Not much to research... do you know what happened?

I know exactly what happened

The index file for the table got corrupted. I told the mysql server to "optimize" (rebuild) the table and it rebuilt it based on the corrupted index. It didn't rebuild the table with the messages that weren't in the corrupted table.

Yes, we do have backups. No, our backups are no complete. Why? Because no ones backups are complete. What does this mean to you? Some messages will definately be lost unless mysql really didn't delete the messages.
