Default How to get more power out of your air tools

Yesterday, I installed a mount for a snow plow on the front of my F-350. It's a pretty small personal snow plow made by SnowBear, but it's the right size for my driveway. (I used to have this plow on the old F-150).

The plow mount uses special metal lock nut that takes an incredible of mount of torque to turn. I have the most powerful 1/2 impact wrench that Ingersol Rand makes and at about 115 PSI which is the max of the compressor, it was not enough to tighten the nut. (The bolt/nut at issue took a 24mm socket)

I switched from the 3/8" 75' hose on my hose reel to a 1/2" 50' long hose. I was shocked that the impact wrench turned the nut with minimal issues. Looks like 3/8" hose has significant restrictions as compared to half inch. I'd estimate that wrench had at least 30% more power.

Here's a picture of the impact wrench connected to the 1/2" hose.

Here's a picture of the plow mount on the truck. You're just looking at what is exposed. There is a serious bracket on each side bolted to the frame.

Audi Content - When changing a pressed-in wheel bearing on your Audi, you really need as much oomph as possible out of your impact wrench. This larger hose will do it.

Default interesting air compressor mod

Never thought that the hose diameter or length would make a difference. I guess it makes sense.

Funny, Rob and I were using my air tools to get the two bolts off on the H-Sport rear sway on my car. I wanted to adjust it to the tightest setting. The 90PSI on the compressor wasn't enough for the tool. I had to turn the output up to 110PSI for the tool to be able to run to loosen the bolts.

Default Yup, that'd be the hi flow option upgrade. Or you can just turn up the line pressure....

if your compressor & hoses can handle it. ;-)

dang it! This proves that my 'anti-bump' method (described in the other thread) did NOT work.
