Default Biten by Autocrossing bug

First time out this weekend auto-x, brought my A4 1.8TQ, ran in G stock with stock tires. Kept improving my times, but was about 2 seconds slower than the guy driving the Acura Integra Type R. Even with racing tires, I would be hard pressed to be able to overtake that kind of performance, especially if they were a better driver. The audi was a blast to drive. Can't wait for the next event. Any auto-x tire tips. If I was going to mess around with taking the audi into different classes, what would be my best bet? I have a Wett chip that I swapped out to keep it stock. Would that fall into ST class, CSP or SM?

Default Where were you at? SoCal???

What event were you at? And as I had a chipped A4, I might be able to help you out there:

A chip is not really legal in CSP. And if you go into CSP, there is going to be a LOT of competition, and cars with a lot more money spent on them than you are willing to. You will need to do every mod allowed as well as "R" tires to be competitive.

STU is what I ran in with my A4, and at this time, there is hardly anyone in it. BUT! This Street Touring Class is starting to catch on, and a lot of the hot cars/drivers may soon be in it. But until then, most of the Honda crowd with all the WRONG parts on their cars will be in it, and you could make a killing there for awhile.

SM is the one a few top drivers in my area are going to, but WATCH OUT! In my area, Tom Berry with his ex-champ CSP Mazda RX3 has now jumped into that class, and he is FAST! That damn car is a few steps away from a full race car, so you will have to do a lot to beat guys like him. Put it this way, most cars yesterday were in the low to high 70's - Tom (DOT "R" tires) got a 65!

Default Not at SoCal???

I am in the Northeast Region. There was one other audi their. I didn't think the chip was legal for STS, I thought that would put you in SM. I also own a modified neon, which would probably be the better way to go, since the stock neons were running the course at about 33 second to my best of 35.4 seconds.

Default Neons are KILLER!

A lot of folks are going to a Neon in Street Touring! That is going to be the next "Miata-ONLY" type class/car. And I heard that the new Neon will have an R/T or ACR version as well, and it will be awesome.

Default Love my A4, but I agree

I had a blast with my A4, and day to day driving it wins hands down, but the A4 is just a little too heavy at about 3500 lbs. My neon weights about 2300-2500 pounds and with all of my modifications is probably putting out about 135-140 HP at the wheels (stock is about 107). It handles pretty well to be honest, especially with some mopar antisway bar's attached. Its just hard to get visions of me piloting my Audi around BTCC style around the orange cones.

Talk about WEIGHT? You ought to see the arguments on the E46 M3 Forum! The new M3 don't look to be too promising! Too heavy, and the motor will have a rev/HP curve like a VTech! And the 3.4 motor is now out (cylinder walls too thin), but a more Euro style 3.2 is back in.
