slight ticking sound from engine, valves out of alignment?
My engine's been making this weird noise lately, it sounds like something is constantly ticking near the valve covers. My mechanics friend said this is due to valves need adjustment. However, I looked in my maintanence manual and it said nothing about it. What's the real reason and how can I identify it?

Re: Oops, it's a 30V 2.8. I just filled it with Mobile1 super-synth 5W30 a few days ago...
Is it the first time on synthetic? I also noticed a slight noisier engine when I changed to synthetic. It's normal though. It never hurts to check oil level also.

Ok, here is the full situation:
The car has been on Mobile1 synthetic for a while, 1+ years. About three weeks ago I noticed silghtly rougher idle and asked this forum for suggestions, some people suggested cleaning the fuel system. So about one week ago I added a full bottle of Techron into the gas tank while it's near empty, and filled it with the appropriate amount of fuel (according to the direction on techron bottle).
Now I'm noticing two things: the ticking, which I remember was there even before adding the techron. If this is related to oil level or oil type, shouldn't it have gone away already?
Also, in the morning, when I start the engine cold, it rocks a bit before starting up. Before the engine will start without even a hickup, but now it's as if some of the cylinders are too "lazy" to budge when it's cold. This doesn't happen when the engine is warm or hot. I'm on my second bottle of Techron now, and the problem doesn't appear to be going away. I've also orderer new spark plugs, and will change them when they arrive.
Given all these symptoms, does any one have any idea what may be wrong? Is this just engine getting old? The car only has 50k on it.

Valve chatter
Some cars are more prone to it than others. My old 97 1.8t used to have pretty loud valve chatter, even running 15w50. It doesn't always indicate that there is something catastrophic about to happen under the hood. My S4 will chatter on particularly warm days.
A couple things to look at: is there enough oil? they'll chatter more if you're low. Is the viscosity to light? Move to the next heavier oil. Also, hard driving or hot days (or both) will enduce it more than other times.
