I have a 14 Q7 that now has 48K miles. I am tired of paying $220 for an oil change. I have done oil changes before on different cars. I am a little worried about the oil cartridge. Do you need to prime the filter with oil? Am I just making a big deal out of this? It shouldn't be any different than changing a filter.

You're making a big deal out of it, it was one of the easiest oil changes and cleanest that I've ever done. I dropped all the plates on the bottom to access the oil pan but since I've done that I went out and bought an oil extractor from Amazon, will make it even easier. No priming of the oil cartridge either.

Thank you for the quick response. What oil extractor did you purchase?
What oil did you use?

Mityvac 7201 Fluid Evacuator Plus

I haven't used it yet but it's rated pretty high.

I used Mobil 1, I'm not 100% sure but I think I used 05/30 if memory serves me correctly. I used the same in my A4 and my Stingray so it boggles my mind that I can't remember for sure what weight I used.

Make sure it meets the VW 502 spec. From this list I don't see that Mobil1 meets that spec. http://www.anciravolkswagen.com/blog...d-Oil-List.pdf

I've used the Euro Castrol 5-40 and the VW branded oil which are both 502.

Edit: This list says that Mobil1 0-40 is 502: https://sites.google.com/site/stoyne...-north-america

For those changing their own oil - how are you disposing of the used oil and filter? I used to change my own but finding someone to take the used oil was such a pain I quit.

Well I'm lucky that my company goes through a lot of oil and we have a used oil tank on site that I can put my used oil in and I put my used oil filter in the regular garbage can. The local o'reilly / autozone / pep boys take it for free as well as our local county drop off sites.

I'd be surprised if your municipality didn't have some sort of hazardous waste disposal program. Some jurisdictions also mandate that companies that sell oil also have to accept the used oil for disposal. In my case I keep a 10 gallon jug for used oil and empty it at the "Eco Depot" periodically when I dispose of used batteries, electronics, appliances, etc.
