I just got a 1-up hitch rack and it is incredible.
for peace of mind i suggest a fork mount roof version if you are set on going on the roof, much more secure than one where you leave both wheels on... plus the fancier carbon framed bikes don't fare well when you clamp to the frame.

my $0.02 i would go with hitch... especially after having both...

I have the 1UP for 3 bikes, best rack on the market and worth every single penny!!

Another option is a Stealth Hitch. We offer a rack package only specifically for bike racks and cargo carriers. https://stealthhitches.com/ Click the link and check it out. Also find customer reviews on this forum!

I am also 6'1 and I put my bike on roof rack of my Q7 all the time; the issue is what kind of bike and how heavy the bike is. It is easier for carbon fiber road/tri bike but definitely not easy for steel frame bikes or heavier mountain bikes.

True, it's not bad with a light bike. Just remember not to pull into a parking garage...
Never forget we had bikes on a Chevy Tahoe as a kid and drove under the cemented in basketball hoop next to the driveway one day... thankfully all that gave way was a wheel on the bike as it came out of the rack.
