it's based on the old 2.8 VR6 which used cast iron block...
as most engines of late 80's early 90's did. the move to all aluminum alloy engines was due to emissions(faster warm-up), weight savings, and fuel efficiency.
IIRC, the 2.7TT was actually a slightly de-bored 2.8, done so to add some strength between pistons, due to the turbo creating more internal pressure and stress.
