Driver's Seat Memory

Driver's Seat Memory
Maybe I'm a spaz but I can't figure out how to save the driver's seat position (as well as external mirror positions) in the memory system on the driver's door. I've read the manual many times, and I think I'm following the instructions, but I can't get it to work. Most times nothing happens when I push one the memory position buttons but some times I get the seat to move to a position different from what I stored.
If you've gotten yours to work can you please describe, in detail, how you got it to work? Should the "OFF" button be lit up when I save my position? Do I hold the MEMO button BEFORE I press the number button or at the same time? Does it matter if the door is open or closed?
I suspect mine is broken but I'd like to follow someone else's advice to verify it.
Thanks!

Actual results may vary...If you continue to have a memory problem, please consult your dealer
Up until the clutch 'just wore out' at 16k miles, the only disappointment with my 2005 S4 was the driver seat memory always got messed up and never knowing what the stop button was really for.
are problems with the seat memory as common as replacing the clutch every 15,000 miles was to the service advisor since having the pedal stick down a few times followed by the usual 2-3 mins of slipping when the pedal finally pops back up and problems getting into rev were nothing to worry about.
at least there is comfort in knowing one can find help..
