Those who went from S4 to RS4 and snow driving questions...
I'm no expert driver in the snow, but quattro sure makes me feel like one. Anyway, have any of you who 1st drove an S4 (B6 or B7) then went with your RS4, notice any different handling characteristics between them in the snow? Does having a 50/50 splint make a difference from a 40/60 splint in power to the wheels? I ask this, because in my S4 in the snow, I never felt it brake loose...never. However, in my RS4, I have felt it get a little loose several times. Of course the others tires still with grip will compensate, but I don't feel I can go as fast as I did in my S4. Now one extremely important fact I have left out is tire size differences. In my S4, I was running 225's on 17" wheels, whereas in the RS4, I am running 255's on 19" wheels. I'm really thinking that is what's making the difference in snow handling.

Tires.
both type and width will have huge effects.
I doubt the center diff ratio will have any effect since it's not fixed in either case.
Part-throttle power is also likely very similar, so that's likely not a factor either.

Re: Those who went from S4 to RS4 and snow driving questions...
I was a previous owner of an S4 (05)& purchased an 08 Imola RS4. I have 245/40/19 dunlop M3 winters on OEM Titanium wheels. I actually think the RS4 handles much better than the old S4. I have participated in the Glacier Lakes Audi club ice driving event & also attended a car control clinic w/ Northstar BMW club to get a better feel for the car's limits in a controlled environment. The one thing I noticed was oversteer was much more prevelant w/ the RS4 than w/ the S4 (especially noticable driving on Lake Cynthia).

absolutely
i went from a b7 s4 and felt much more confident on snow and ice. i think it's primarily a power issue though. the rs4 is overpowered for winter driving and can break free with a flick of the plantar flexors, unlike the s4 which takes a little more effort.

rs4 does fishtail a little because the 40/60 ratio.. if you have good tires and you don't stomp on the gas when its snowing you should be fine.
