Compressor is 'ON" in the "AUTO" function and maybe DEFROST above a specific ambient..RTM..

Yeah pretty sure....they use the variable compression ac compressor..
for example, on the a4 when I do the ac bulletin for musty smell, you have to run the heater on full high temp output for like 45 minutes and the thing is still draining water from the evaporator.

I thought that econ simply recirculates the air already in the cabin as opposed to bringing in
fresh air from the outside. I believe turning econ on or off does not affect the AC. However, having the econ mode on while using the AC would cool the car down fastest as it would cool the air that is already in the cabin. Im not 100% on this, check the owners manual to be sure.

No. It deactivates the compressor, less HP usage..therefore "ECON" (yeah).
