Tiptronic: D acts like S
In starting off from a stop sign in just normal, everyday driving, the transmission, sometimes, acts like it is in sport mode (S) even though the lever is in Drive mode (D). The car moves off in 1st gear rather than the normal 2nd and doesn't shift up quickly like it normally does in D. We have to use the + paddle to get an upshift. This can happen even though we have not been doing any spirited driving--we know that D acts like S when we have been having fun. What can we do to get back normal function of the D mode on our 2004 S4? Thanks.

When was the last time a transmission oil change was performed on your tip? I recollect it being around every 40kmi. Or it could be a faulty CVT control unit or an internal issue. I would take it to a certified Audi mechanic.

Starting off in D like it was in S
After the engine died on us last week, we rushed to the dealer where a brake light switch was installed. No problems since with transmission or with stalling. Was there a connection? Don't know. (We avoided a fluid change.)
I know now that our S4 does not start out in 2nd from a stop when in D--it begins in 1st but shifts up quickly at low RPM. When it was giving us trouble, it would not shift until 6K RPM just as if it were in S mode.
All is normal now.
