My A4 never did that even when new. I guess my new used Avant has a good trans.

1st is the only gear I have to be slow and easy with the first shifts of the day when it's cold.

Default I think some of the S4 came with synthetic from the factory.
My S shifts much better in the cold than my A4 did. Not sure why. Even my hondas have had a little trouble with 2nd in the cold with Honda fluid in the gearbox or redline.

Default Good for you! ... as all S4 trannies are rough and notchy when cold...
Takes couple minutes to be smooth...
