thanks for the response, FIrst track session, and first EGT replacement-
my trusted mechanic didn't seem put off by it, but I just wondering how common it was.

It could be from vibrations as well. When my driver side EGT went and I tried to replace it I was
unable to undo the sensor from the turbo. It's such a pita. The sensor was throwing intermittent code and I thought it could have been electronic amplifier (signal conditioner) and not the thermocouple itself. So I cut the wire to the sensor close to the connector and removed the connector from the car. Disassembled and found that the welding point where the TC wire connects to the PCB is broken. I ended up replacing the amplifier (conditioner) itself and leaving the thermocouple as is. It was two years ago and it's still hanging in there.
