Default Rough idle and misfires fixed by dealer...

I had a rough idle and "lean condition" codes for a few months. The dealer (Holbert's in Warrington, PA) replaced the MAF sensor and said the problem was fixed. After a few hours of driving the car, the problem returned along with the CEL. I checked the codes and found that all cylinders except for one were misfiring. I took it back and they performed a "decarbonization" of the entire system. Their explanation was that when the MAF sensor was bad, the engine built up alot of carbon deposits as a result of the mixture being wrong. After the MAF sensor was replaced, that carbon build-up needed to be removed for the engine to run right....

It seems to have worked.

Just an FYI...

Try running Techron or other similar products on a regular basis (I do it every 5k miles).

Isnt that a little excessive with all the additives and chemicals and what not in those cleaners?

Every 5k does seem like overkill. I put some in at 30k, and I'll probably put some more in at 50k.

Default Why would "lean" produce carbon?

Pardon my ignorance (and enlighten me), but I can't see why a lean condition would yield carbonization. I would think a lean condition would lead to heat damage related wear as the engine would run hotter ... thereby burning out any carbon build-up. So can someone explain how lean=carbon?
