A Volvo that's as fast as an S4 stock or chipped? Supposedly this one is...
I ran into a guy with a 850 R today. I saw him pass a car on the highway and go from 55 to 75 in the blink of an eye. I mean his car really flew. Turns out we work in the same building so I stopped by and talked to him in the parking lot. According to him the 850 R is a limited edition model, of which only 2000 were made. It has 240hp stock, with 250lb/ft of torque. The turbo also begins to show boost at 2200rpm. When chipped with exhaust he claims the car will have 320hp. Does this sound fishy to anyone else? When he first started spitting these stats I though he was talking about my car. My question is, has anyone heard of this model and knows any stats on it? To pump 320hp from a single turbo, it'd have to be quite a sizeable one at which point it wouldn't spool at such low rpms. Maybe this is a twin turbo volvo?

Have you ever driven one? They don't spool at low RPMs. I'd believe 300hp from a chip.

the 850 Rs are limited production (more)....
they are pretty damn fast too. most people would never think these cars are that fast. i really doubt the 320 hp out of a single turbo, but these rides pull very well. unique ride nonetheless...

850R is SWEET....
They only shipped in automatic format, but with a chip, it could spank the crap out of an S4 once it's rolling. From a stop, the S4's AWD would give it the leg up. I think the 850R has a mitsu turbo, and it's HUGE, so it can probably handle 20+ psi ... Don't doubt those beasts!

He is on crack. Here's some real info...
The 850 R was indeed a limited edition model. It does have 240HP stock. However, it has only 221 lb-ft of torque stock. He pulled the 250 number out of his ***. <a href="http://carpoint.msn.com/Vip/Engines/Volvo/850/1996.asp">Here's proof for those two numbers.</a>
When only chipped, the R model can produce 275HP, which is the same amount as the regular turbo/T-5 models. This is because the R model already runs higher boost to achieve the 240HP rather than 222HP. It still has the same turbo, thus the limit of 275HP when chipped. With the IPD exhaust, up to another 14HP can be gained, meaning a total of 289 - 290HP. Again, he pulled that 320 number out of his ***. <a href="http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo/catalog/motronic_upgrade_specs.html">Here's info and dyno charts on the chip available for the 850 R.</a>
As for acceleration compared to a S4...if he chips the R and gets an exhaust, he'll be good competition for you. An IPD 850 Turbo shown in an old issue of European Car ran a 0-60 time of 5.5 secs. This was with a manual transmission however. If my memory serves me correctly, the 850 R's sold in the US came only with automatics. Still fast, and can give you a run for your money.
How do I know all this? I've been a Volvo owner 10 times longer than I've been an Audi owner.

Thanks guys for all the insightful info. Hopefully he'll want to "play" one day. I do have to say...
that the 850R is as stealth, if not more, then the S4. His was a wagon which made its speed look that much more out of place. My first words to him sum it up the best way: "What did you do to that thing? I've never seen a Volvo go that fast"

C70's are pretty quick...
...a few weeks ago, I had one of them get up behind me and whip around like a jerk. I thought it was a one of the S40's, and so, thinking I'd easily smoke him in 3rd, I didn't downshift to 2nd (I was only going about 30)...so, he was keeping right up with me, though in the upper ranges of 3rd I started pulling ahead, and once I hit 4th I started leaving him...but by this time, it was time to call it off & slow dowm, so I was left wishing I'd downshifted and _really_ spanked him..<p>'00 S4
