what car would you buy today for 35k or less if you had to replace your S4?

test drove the g35 Coupe tonight - sigh
Don't get me wrong, it's not an awful car, I would give it 2 stars out of 5.
1 star for good power
1 star for good brakes & reasonable handling (the Brembo pkg) and extra credit for a nice shifter action. The manual shift up (ala tiptronic) with the auto is nice. But floor the auto and you get typical strained engine sound.
No star for a cramped interior (how can they say it has more room than an A4?) Headroom is so low in back that 6 footers have to ride with their chin down to their chest to avoid slamming against the rear window - My old Corrado had more room.
The interior trim is fussy, the steering wheel is tiny and hard compared to the S4, the center dash has a ridiculous analog clock that looks like a 1960 oven timer. There is an obnoxious frosted metal instrument panel in the center of the dash that looks like a cheap boom box (the $35 Aiwa CSD-TD32 to be precise). It beckons you to scrape your nails across it and flake the metallic plastic off the buttons. You can't get in the back seat until the front seats (which are motorized)trundle forward. Takes at least twice as long to get in vs flip seats. Guess you're screwed if the battery goes - you can't even open the trunk as there is no key/release. Couldn't see anything sexy about the body style. IMHO: a 2nd rate A4 with a V6. Buy the options and its no longer 31k, more like 36. I would definitely go with the sedan over the coupe, but the other complaints still apply.
