Default warm and on a flat surface, shut off car, let sit for 5, then check it, but...

opening the hood can void your warranty.

ps, all is correct except the warranty part.

Default Best and easiest time is when you fill up with gas, after filling up.

After turning the car off, you need to wait a little bit for the majority of the oil to return to the pan for a good reading. Gas stations usually are pretty level and from the time you turn you car off to the time you are done filling up is usually enough time.

Default First thing in the morning before starting. Why the hell would you need to do it warm?...

You won't get an accurate reading letting it cool for just 5 minutes. You don't want too much oil, nor to little...
