For you guys that know anything about the Volvo S60 T5, I've got a question for you.
My friend, who has driven my S (driving experience explained in my post below) swears the S60 T5, would be a match for the S. And I strongly believe there is no chance for the Volvo, so I don't even bother arguing with this guy. Now at Edmunds.com, I looked over the HP & Torque #'s and they seem to be in the same range for both vehicles. Although the Volvo has a smaller 2.3L and it's lighter by ~300+lbs, why is the Volvo SO much slower in the 0-60MPH times?

My guess would be that the Volvo suffers from bad turbo lag, since it has a single turbo...
Thus, off the line, it gets beaten while waiting for boost. Once you are off and running (with the turbos spinning), I think the Volvo will hold up to the S4.
Saabs are very similar in this respect. My sister's 900 SE Turbo has major turbo lag that leads to very slingshot-style driving at low speeds. But at highway speed, it has great passing power, since the turbos are already going.

I attended the Volvo Driving Event ...
Can't remember the name. But They had the S60 T5 and compared it to Mercedes C320, BMW 330, etc... No S4 there. That should tell you something.
My impression about the S60... Quite a bit of turbo lag, suspensions are too soft for my taste. I prefer the smoother power of two small turbos of the S4 over one bigger turbo. It sucks when the power surges on together with torque steer when you are in the middle of a turn.
My $.02.

The 98 C70 is the fastest Volvo made as of yet
and that thing can keep up with the S at highway speeds, but the S would still win and from a start, there is no contest S is best. I was a lucky owner of that car, and I say lucky because I couldn't find one then. I picked it up from the Nanuette NY Volvo dealership and had to pay a bundle, more than the S. At low end, it lacks power due to serious turbo lag, you feel like there are mice on a treadmill until 3500 rpm, then it is a different story. The turbo used is larger than ours, requiring significantly more spool-up time, add that we have 2, there is no comparison. The Volvo is nice, but lacks Audi's attention to detail in all aspects.
