Default 2003 Audi TT Quattro 3.2 fuel gauge incorrect

I just bought my Audi TT, it's my dream car and considering I don't have too much money, I could only buy an used one, which is 2003 Audi TT quattro 3.2 (47800 miles).

However, since I bought it last month, I just found out something wrong with the fuel gauge. Here is the story.

When the indicator of the fuel gauge is just in the middle, the warning light of fuel tank (yellow) is on. I couldn't test it if it would be really empty soon because it would be just stopped on the road. When I switch off the car, the indicator of the fuel gauge goes to zero at most of the time, but sometimes it doesn't.

I've asked my garage (I usually went to for my previous car, which is independent Audi specialists), they asked me to ask audi dealer first. So I called the local audi dealer and they said it might need to change the dashboard, which would cost around £1000 (= US $1600). If it's the sender, it would cost around £500 (= US $800), but they have to do diagnostic first (£180 = US $290). I'm living in England by the way.

I'm wondering if it's really the faulty of the dashboard? I've checked one previous post here, someone had the similar problem and used Techron to fix it.

Could anyone please give me some suggestions? Could Techron fix it? I don't know how Techron works. I have asked my garage they didn't know anything about Techron.

Thank you so much in advance.

The fuel gauge servo motors in these instrument clusters fail all the time as a result of a faulty design, but it's no reason to replace the whole cluster; the dealer just doesn't want to piddle around with the small stuff. I had my fuel gauge servo motor replaced separate of the whole cluster. A shop local to me does the work and I highly recommend him. I don't think it cost me more than $100, but I'll let you get a price quote from him. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get you his contact info.
