About Mobil 1.....
Well, it's about time for my 20K service and I had put Mobil 5W-30 in the car at the 10K service interval.
Today, I went to a Mobil 1 shop to pick up the same oil when the tech there told me that I should be using 15W-50 because it is recommended for all W5 engines (whatever that meant). He told me that the TT's engine is the same as the VW's engine and that he recommends that weight because the 5W-30 will burn a lot faster and could cause wear if it is driven hard.
I do a lot of hard driving on my car at high speeds. I want to make sure my car gets what will be best for it.
If 15W-50 is better for the car, is it safe to put it in given that I put 5W-30 in the car when I had prior oil change?
What do you all think?

You dont need a 50 weight oil...
Especially as winter approaches. It is the turbo that causes loss of oil. It's not burned.
I end up using the nornal 4.8 qts of 0W30 plus at about 6K to 7K have to add another quart between 10k oil changes.

It's always warm weather (sometimes sweltering hot) for me in S.FL ...would that make a difference?
He did mention that our warmand hot weather would be a factor also?

Viscosity tables from Audi
Here's the viscosity table from the service manual for the TT:
There are two specs, one is VW 500 00 and the other is VW 501 00. AFAIK Mobil 1 meets both the 500 and 501 tests (these tests are actually quite old).
For VW 500 00:
below -22 F to above 95 F (that is all temps)
5W-30 or 5W-40 or 10W-30 or 10W-40
For VW 501 01:
All temps
5W-50 or 10W-50 or 10W-60
Below 59 degrees F
5W-30 or 5W-40 or 10W-30 or 10W-40
Above 5 degrees F (this bar actually goes above 104 degrees F so it has the highest high end)
15W-40 or 15W-50 or 20W-40 or 20W-50
Note that 0W-30 is not in this table!
I don;t think you get to 5 degrees in Florida, so 15W-50 is a good recommendation.
I called Audi and talked to an "Audi Advocate" who stated that 0W-30 is OK to use but that one should not use it if a viscosity from the table was available.

I have checked past postings but there are differing opinions...
regarding weight. We all seem to agree that full synthetic is better for the car but there are so many darn variations. I'm having a problem picking the best flavor. They are all good but I want to best one which will suit the driving conditions to that the TT will be subjected to. That is high speed for long periods (1-2 hours of highway driving), high revs, no stop and go, there are no winters to worry about for my car, but sometimes there are some really hot days (this year wasn't bad at all)
I realize that the choice of weight is relative to everyone's TT driving regiment.
I'll keep researching it before I make an appointment. Most likely, it will 5W-30.
Any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
To those who have provide useful info...thanx.

This thread hilites the problem of 'W' classifications of oil...think about this>>>
the same 'W' classification for dino juice that has been in effect for more years than many are in age on this forum is still being applied to synthetic oil. That rating is only ONE component of modern synthetic oil and there is so much more that is involved and in particular the additives. Please do not look at his question as preachy but what does the nomenclature "0-40" or "5-30" mean? as opposed to "Meets engine performance requirements of Audi, BMW, Porsche, Saab, Volkswagen and Volvo" and "European ACEA A3/B3/B4-98 Approved"....if you are like most (including me but was very enlightened at TT East when Mobil gave a tech presentation about this subject) all of this is very abstract. You CAN us Mobil 1 0-40W with full confidence...it is still referred to as "European Car Formula" oil specifically developed by Mobil 1 for the companies noted above for smaller displacement engines that are blown and have high per liter to hp or torque outputs...

Did Mobil ever come back with answers to my questions?
Grade classification was last revised on Dec. 1999 with the change mandated by Aug. 2001. At TT-East Mobil guy presented old classification (Apr '97). BTW "W" grades range from 0 to 25, 0W-40 is one grade of Mobil 1, 0-40W doesn't exist as a classification.
