I may try "shrink-n-repair" heat shrink wire wrap first before I consider surgery...But, yeah that has crossed my mind to take it all apart.

The problem is as soon as you touch one wire the rest of the wires next to it start crumbling. Technically, there were four wires inside that were still soft and flexible. They were clearly made out of a different material.
