Default Engine startup problems??!

First of all let me say hello. I've been a long-time reader of this forum, but have just registered today. My name is Charles, I'm 33, and I live in Charleston, SC (it is freaking hot down here).
Now, here is my problem. I have an '01 225QR with 21,000 miles on it. Since March of this year, I have begun to modify it. The mods (in order of installation) are REVO tune, Neuspeed P-flo (I know, shoulda bought TTDA, probably still will), Forge DV, and Neuspeed cat-back. I have had no problems with the REVO tune, except for the fact that the d@m# Check Engine light won't go away. My problem began after the installation of the other mods. When my car's engine is hot, and the car is parked on an incline (exhaust facing downhill), the car is very reluctant to start. Once it finally does start, it sputters and blows black smoke from the pipes. It looks and sounds terrible, not to mention the fact that it is embarrassing. When this happens, the car wants to idle at 1500 rpm as opposed to the usual 800 rpm. This generally lasts for several minutes, and is really bugging the s#*7 out of me. Anyone have ideas as to: 1) what is causing this, and 2)how to correct the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS. My thoughts are that I either have a MAF problem, or that oil is being blown into my catalytic converter.

Default First step is to see what codes you're throwing....

any diagnosis before that would just be a guess. Find someone with a Vag-Com and let them hook up your car, or buy one and do it yourself.

Welcome, by the way! I'm not too far from ya, in Atlanta, GA.

Yeah, have someone put the VAG on it to check the codes.

Default Sounds like your car is running very rich....

Do you have a Vag com or know someone that has one? You really need to see what the error codes are. If you are getting a check engine light than your ECU isn't getting the right signal from the MAF and is putting your car into a way rich safe mode. That results in poor running of the engine and poor performance.
To know for sure you need to hook it up to a Vag com. Also change your temp Sensor. It can cause all sorts of problems especially if you still have the old black top style. Change it out for a new and improved Green top.
But first of all I would say get it Vag com'ed

Good Luck...

Thanks for the info. I will try to get it VAG'ed this coming week. If my car is running too rich, what would the solution be? My main concern is that the solution may affect my REVO tune. Is this a legitimate concern?

Default Your Revo tune will not be affected.

It is in Permanent Memory of the ECU. The only way the Revo Tune will be affected if you erase the Eprom which you can't without the proper software. Get it Vag Comed first and then see what kind of codes it shows. Then get the codes cleared and see what codes come back. It could be a bad MAF. They are known to cause all sorts of issues including causing a rich condition.
Another cheap fix you can try is replace your Temperature Sensor. It's an easy $6.00 buck fix and about 10 minutes to install. Don't let the dealer install it. They will rip you off and charge you way more than they should.
Make sure you get the Temp sensor with the GREEN Top. The one with the Black top is old and should not be used.

After you replace the MAF and the Temp sensor clear the codes and see if your running issues are solved.

Good luck to you. I know this can be very frustrating.

Anyone have a diagram of where the temp sensor is located?
