Default HELP - Speedo & Tach needles point straight down

First the speedo needle started slowly (week by week) resetting its resting position to less than zero, which means pointing closer to straight down toward the 6 o'clock position. The speedo reads perfect, just that it reads about 30 MPH slow because it's starting at what would be negative 30MPH. Then a couple months ago my tach started doing the same thing so that it now starts at around negative 2K RPM, but it otherwise works perfectly. It is almost as if both needles came loose from their fitting so they point straight down due to gravity at rest. But, if that were the case then I wouldn't think they would move up normally with speed or RPM. I've heard about stepper motors, which I really don't understand. I don't want to pull the cluster myself, so I'd like to know the best solution. I'd even be happy if I knew what to tell an independent European repair facility about how to fix. I'm certainly not taking it to the local Audi dealer in Oxnard. I tried and the service writer immediately said you need a new instrument cluster for $2K. And to make matters worse he told me that my battery was completely dead and wouldn't hold a charge and wanted to sell and install a new one for $400. No joke. Took it home and charged it and it's been fine ever since. Anyway, any advice on the speedo and tach would be greatly appreciated. My car is a 2004 3.2 Roadster with only 40K miles.

Thanks Vegas-roadster. I checked out the links, but unfortunately none of them had to do with my problem.

Don't know how you can say that. Cluster issues exhibit themselves in different ways. A rebuild replaces all key cluster components irrespective of your specific problem which is a much cheaper alternative than a new cluster. If your dealer says a new cluster will fix your problem, a rebuild will fix it too.

Just got my cluster back from a complete rebuild, could not be happier. LCD screen is now perfect, temp & fuel gages read accurately now. Very thorough job on the rebuild, rebuilder also performs a backup of the cluster including mileage, and security module in case of future replacement or loss during shipping etc. I highly recommend.

I had a crappy LED display and the speedo needle was pointing down. I found a place on Ebay of all places that did the rebuild, replaced the stepper motor on the speedo and replaced the LED for $99. Don't discount good advice. Nearly everyone with a TT mk1 has been in your shoes.
