My TT estimates 900+ Miles to empty!!!
During a 300 mile-I have nothing to do-road trip today I almost ran out of gas. Crusing out of Sedona I head into the Bradshaw Mts. for some tire squeeling fun on my way back home(Phoenix).Suddenly my gas light is on & I have 20 miles to empty. I am 35mi from the nearest town. Lng story short-I drive for about 10 miles with the gauge reading empty("0" miles) before I coast into a gas station and stop sweating. At least I get to see how much gas I had left-but I fill the tank with only 12.1 gallons???!!! I thought I had a 16 gallon tank??(180FWD)--THEN after filling up I start the car and my display reads 925mi to empty! What did I miss??

I've learned the gauges are there for purely aesthetic reasons, you'll have to measure using some...
other, albeit less conventional, method, three examples follow:
1) mental running total of miles driven, and at what speed, w/ or w/o ac and # of passengers (like a trip computer but less handy)
2) fill your tank compulsively - 2-3 top-offs a day should ensure you never actually run out, regardless of what the pretty, but useless gauges say
3) use the number of roadkill you pass as an indicator - I find one raccoon, 3 assorted small rodents, a deer, and a domestic pet (oh mama, what happened to Bowser?) usually indicate that it is time for a fill-up
On a more serious note - I find that there is little, if any, correlation between my usually optimisitic trip computer, the gauge, and the actual fill-up.
