One week and ~1800 miles later, I'm back from the ETPA Driving School!
Had a great time and a great trip.
3" of snow the day I left and it it was snowing
on my drive back up the mountin tonight, but Quattro
(even with summer tires) and conscious driving
pulled through again.
I stopped by Austin on my way back from Kilgore
just in time for an ice storm which pretty much
shut down the entire town. The streets were
empty and even some of the highways closed. I
drove on in to the University with no problems
in the TT, but of course, all of my colleagues
stayed home- that's what you do in Austin when
it's -gasp- below 32 degrees, you know. LOL.
Met TT Jim from Albuquerque on the way to
Kilgore. We drove all the way through Abilene
looking for the Olive Garden, but ended up at a
great big steak house, where I had the small ribeye
which was more than I could eat! All the waitresses
wore white cowboy hats and there were plenty of steer
on the walls. Welcome back to Texas.
The drive from there to Kilgore the next day
was uneventful and the party at Ferg's was a
great start to the weekend events.
As I said before, if you haven't gone to one
of these classes before, you must go! Great
class, great fun, and great folk to hang out
with. The last day, when we were honing our
skills on the highway course, people were
bumming rides with everyone else on the course
while waiting for their turns to come up. I was
able to ride in several other TTs, a Trans Am,
Mini, Beetle, and probably something else I've
forgotten now. The comraderie of the group
gelled quickly; I only wish the meaning of
"with control comes speed" gelled simililarly
quickly, but I hope to make it to a second
class to practice that.
On the way back from Austin today, I got to practice the
emergency lane change maneuver several times.
Warning: Avoid driving through Hobbs, NM if at
all possible. Egads, they were terrible
drivers there!! (Then, I did a few more
lane changes, just for fun, on the empty
roads afterwards....)
Thanks Ferg- for the class, the group, and
for being a true friend and host. Hope to see
you and the rest of the class again before too
long.
Cheers

You mean that you have to drive through Hobbs to find >>
bad NM drivers? As far as I know, there are 1.5 mil of them (except you, of course! :-)
Sounds like a great time. have you looked into exhausts yet?

True there are bad NM drivers everywhere...
But Hobbs seemed COMPLETELY FULL of them! It was
amazing how many times I got cut off and saw
others in front of me also cut off - and all
by different drivers. It was truly ugly.
Exhausts- yeah, got to see the APR and the Miltek
90mm exhaust in action in Kilgore over the weekend. They
both sounded good and seemed they'd be good choices.
At this point, if/when I exhaust, I'd probably
go with the Miltek high-flow.
How you doin'?
