The mk1 lived too long because they delayed the launch of the mk2

Yeah. Nobody was buying the MK1 in its last year. MK2 will probably fair better in its latter years.

You couldn't even buy a mk1 in some states in the final years due to emissions

Not sure that the mk2 will do better in its final years, I don't think its sales up to this point have matched the mk1, the economy probably won't be much better around the time the mk2 is phased out.
