Default Fighting a 17544

<center><img src="http://members.***.net/barshnik/Readiness.jpg"></center><p>2001 Passat 1.8t manual trans.

About a year ago, I had a 'bank 1 too lean' code. After checking all vacuum lines, I replaced the MAF - code went away for nearly a year, until now. Every 2nd or 3rd day, I'll get a 17544.

Have re-checked vacuum lines, can find nothing wrong.

I just bought my registered Vag-Com yesterday (409-1 with a generic eBay serial cable). Have not received the Bentley CD yet, so be gentle with me &lt;g&gt;. With the code cleared, block 032 is showing 5.4% (idle), and near 0 in the 2nd entry (mult?)

I must say that the MAF I bought last year was a 'reconditioned' Bosch from the VW dealer, not a 'new' one.

I admit I'm not up to speed yet, so any help in diagnosing this code will be appreciated. Oh, the code normally appears when I come to an idle after having driven a while...

Thanks for any direction you can give...

Oh, what might the attached 'Readiness' mean?

Sorry about not posting ALL code info, I'll do as soon as the CEL appears again (most likely today).

Default Info on Readiness

I wouldn't worry about the readiness screen. Since you cleared your codes all the tests have changed to failed or incomplete. It takes certain driving conditions to make them pass again. Check the link out, it will explain a lot.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/readiness.html">http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/readiness.html</a</li></ul>

OK, happened again this PM (hot outside, as is normal here is Las Vegas.) Drove normally, came to a stop light (idle) and CEL pops up:

Thursday, 06 July 2006, 14:40:41

VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-S

Control Module Part Number: 4B0 906 018 BQ

Component and/or Version: 1.8L R4/5VT G 0003

Software Coding: 16501

Work Shop Code: WSC 00028

1 Fault Found:
17544 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Lean

P1136 - 35-00 - -

Got home, left car idle while hooking up laptop, checked 032 and showed 8.4 at idle and -3.1 at partial throttle.

Possible MAF bleeping over a 10 threshold momentarily?

Remember, I replaced MAF less than a year ago with a 'remanufactured' unit from the dealer. Or, do I go back to checking more vacuum lines?

Here are some readings from the log:
Thursday 6 July 2006 14:27:35
4B0 906 018 BQ 1.8L R4/5VT G 0003 Group A: '032 Group B: Not Running Group C: Not Running
At Idle Partial Throttle No Data No Data
TIME -10.1 -10.1 TIME TIME
Marker STAMP % % STAMP STAMP
0.28 8.4 -3.1 0.58 8.4 -3.1 0.89 8.4 -3.1 1.19 8.4 -3.1 1.49 8.4 -3.1 1.79 8.4 -3.1

Anything else I should check in Vag-Com that would help? Thanks,

John F

Default Found the problem (embarrased)

<center><img src="http://members.***.net/barshnik/Lhose.jpg"></center><p>Embarrased because I checked &amp; replaced the small fabric hoses, but neglected to look at the rubber ones. Here is the 'L' hose. Gee, you think this could result in a vacuum leak?
