Audi A3 Driver Leads Police on Wild Chase With Toddler in Tow
After running a red light, this Audi A3 driver opted to try and get away from police, and even rammed a cruiser with a child in his back seat.
Police chases – while perhaps not quite as prevalent as they used to be – still happen on a regular basis, and the vast majority of the time, only result in extra charges for those attempting to get away. These days, police have more tech than ever before with which they can track folks who choose to engage in illegal activities, whether it be old fashioned radios or helicopters, and yet, many continue to try and flee with little success. That was also true of a man driving an Audi A3 recently, who led police on a wild chase in the UK, but this time, he did so with a rather young passenger in tow, according to the Daily Mail.
The man – 27-year-old Demetrious Nickoloau – was driving along in his Audi A3 when Warwickshire Police attempted to pull him over for running a red light, but as one might have guessed by now, he didn’t stop. Rather, Nickoloau took off, weaving in and out of traffic at high speed as he attempted to get away. He reached speeds upwards of 75 mph in a 30 mph zone in the process, narrowly missing several potential collisions as the pursuit lasted far longer than law enforcement would have hoped.
Eventually, police were able to box Nikoloau in when he reached the highway, but he still didn’t give up – rather, the Audi A3 driver rammed a police car multiple times in a futile final effort to escape the long arm of the law. Police proceeded to take him into custody, but that’s when they made a rather shocking discovery – there was an 18-month-old child in the back seat – and that wasn’t even the end of Nikoloau’s violations, as his Audi was also fitted with fake tags.
When he went to court, Niloloau wound up pleading guilty to a number of offenses – assault, ill-treatment, neglect and abandoning a child, causing unnecessary suffering to a child, dangerous driving, and driving without insurance, receiving 42 months in jail for his trangressions – all because he ran a red light and refused to stop for police. Fortunately for other drivers in the UK, it doesn’t look like he’ll be back out on the roadways – at least not legally – for a while.
“Demetrious had a total disregard for the safety of other road users as he drove at high speed dangerously overtaking and weaving through other vehicles in an attempt to evade capture,” said PC Simon Dalby, Roads Policing Officer. “He certainly had no concern for the safety of the public or the extremely vulnerable 18-month-old child that was in the back seat of his car and his sentence reflects this. Fortunately the pursuit was brought to a safe conclusion and following the sentence, Demetrious has now been denied the use of the roads for several years to come and will need to pass an extended retest before he can drive again.”
