Default A4 12V belt noise questions

I'm starting to get some belt noise from my A4. Its difficult to say if its the ribbed belt or the timing belt, although if it were the timing belt I think it could be more muffled.I need to isolate which one. I am thinking that I should be able to temporarily remove the ribbed belt and start the motor since the water pump is driven by the timing belt. That way if there is any noise at all its the timing belt and needs to be taken care of ASAP. Any flaws in my logic? Can I remove the ribbed belt without putting the car in service position? I am kinda hoping its the ribbed belt tensioner. I know you are supposed to mark the ribbed belt so as to keep the direction the same. All the belts/ waterpump/ tensioners were replaed 40K miles ago so its a bit premature for a failure.

Default It'll run w/o the ribbed belt for a short period of time (battery power only)

I drove mine for about 2 blocks after my belt slipped off last week.

Default Don't plan on driving it , I just want to remove the belt..

The noise is there pretty much all the time.

Bentley manual is a little vague but it looks like if I remove the tensioner the belt should come off??

Default The tensioner is spring loaded. There is a hex "stud" on it (19mm, iirc). Put a socket and breaker

bar on it and rotate it down to remove the tension off the belt.

Default Thanks for the assist! I haven't been able to respond as often as usual lately.

I hate leaving someone hanging w/ a question since I know how it feels. AudiMick: Mr D. is correct, & I wouldn't advise trying to drive your car w/o the belt. My situation was sort of a semi-emergency type one. Besides, you'll only drive until your battery dies, & that's not very long at all.
