Oil Recommendation and Timing Belt Question
I got my S4 from Riverside Audi.... I picked it up with 68,000 miles on it... Is there a way you can tell if your timing belt has been done? or do you have to ask the car and wait for the voice inside to answer !? Also........ im thinking of switching over to Royal Purple 5w-30 oil. Is that a good choice? any feedback on that ? TIA!

It probably hasnt been done
You don't need to change ur timing belt until atleast 90,000 miles. I know riverside audi, i live in north jersey. I doubt they did it or the last owner did it. COuld be wrong though

Audi says use oil that meets the VW 502/505 specs. RP 5w-30 has not been tested to those specs...
is it good oil? I think it likely is, based upon testimonials from others on these forums, but I have no personal experience with it. Mobil 1 0w-40 and other 5w-40 weight full synthetics meet these specs. If you are out of warranty, which of course you are, then it is up to you. Do a search and you'll find a link to the updated approved oil lists. Personally, I like something that is a xw-40 myself, especially in summers here in Ohio (midwestern desert). In winter, the Castrol Syntec European formula that is Made in Germany 0w-30 is very popular and loved by many.
Do a search on the B5 S4 forum and you'll get a lot of opinions on the Royal Purple stuff (RP).

Re: Oil Recommendation and Timing Belt Question
Royal Purple isn't especially good oil. You need to use something with an "A3" rating. Most 30-wt oils will be A1, except Castrol 0W-30 German and I think BMW 5W-30. Maybe others, but I haven't seen them. The best oil for our cars is the German Castrol IMO (check AutoZone--hard to find) or Mobil 1 0W-40, which should be readily available. Again, check for the VW and ACEA A3 ratings if in doubt.

To elaborate: A3 = engine wear protection, A1 = fuel economy. Thus thin oils will get the A1 rating
while only the thicker oils will meet the A3 rating as it concerns itself with reducing engine wear and deposit buildup. You can Google ACEA ratings if you wish to learn more...
