sure... you will also get a chance to try a new clutch and tranny.

Actually, IIRC, the ZF tranny has no clutch plates at all.

Default I have...

I drove a Golf and the clutch got stuck - stuck as in permanently engaged.

That's what I did:

I turned the motor off and put in the first gear. I turned the ignition key and the car started moving (it wasn't pretty). At about 1000 RPM I got off the gas and shifted (without clutch!) into neutral. I got off the gas and pulled the stick back towards second gear. When engine and transmission RPM were the same, the second gear engaged. With that method I got the car also into third gear. But I couldn't go faster than 30 mph or so, and it was a tad unsettling. :-P
