Default I have a suspicion they sold me S4 rear calipers 8E0-615-423/4C instead of 8D0-615-423/4C

Just checked on Etka and 2001 is a year when both the D and the E models were available.

Might the E calipers still fit my B5 and be causing the symptoms of deep pedal travel and rear brake imbalance?

Do you know if the E calipers hold a bigger volume of liquid (bigger pistons and all)? This might be the reson for the longer pedal travel.

Default enough already. you have a leak and/or air. take it back to the shop that installed them.

If anything, you could put the A4's back on to see if it clears that issue.

100% sure it's the calipers, this is why I'm asking about difference between E and D

I paid over $400 for those damned calipers so that I would have to put the stock ones back on

Default I know it's upsetting to spend money on a mod and not get the results you wanted but the sad news is

at this point, you're going to have to pay again...either to find another S4 caliper or put the A4 back on to see if clears the issue.

And then there's the 22mm-thick rotors and new pads.
