Cleaning winter windshield (X-post)

Cleaning winter windshield (X-post)
With the snow and salt my windshield has been pathetically dirty the last few weeks.
Since it's raining and 36F, the only thing I could do for my car today was wash the windows.
Started with clay lubricated with car wash soap (maybe 3:1 water:soap) Sprayed that off and dried.
Still noticed that faint windshield haze just before evaporation in that wiper pattern, as if there was still junk on there?
So I said, screw it, and used some of that spray on Accuvision (seems like RainX knockoff-but says no buffing)
Came off easier than RainX. And that transient haze is gone.
So here are the Q's. Was there stuff on the windshield that got covered by the window 'wax'? That claying didn't remove? Did I clay correctly? Or do the wipers and grit actually scratch the windshield? Necessitating 'filling in the holes' with wax.
Comments appreciated.

I've always hated the rainx products because they leave a film on the glass surface...
And this oily film can help you in the rain and and snow after time. However, over long periods of time without reapplying the rainx, the glass surface begins to attract dirt making it harder to see.
I typically just use windex and newspaper to clean my windows. And when it rains, I find I get the same results that from other experiences with rainx. I'm usually able to just turn off my wind shield wipers and the rain beads away.
