Help: P0171 error code

Help: P0171 error code

My B6 A4 1.8T check engine light has been on for a week or so, so I had a friend with an OBD scanner check the code for me. It returned only one error:

P0171 mod$10 Bank1 System too lean

I did some searching and saw some stuff about MAF sensors and stuff. Does anybody know some simple things I can check before I pay $100 for the dealer to look at it?

BTW- We reset the error code to see if it comes back.

Take it to autozone before the dealer.

Stealership has been lying!

First, I checked the air filter and it looks like it hasn't been changed in 60K+ miles. Even the parts guy at the dealer said it was really old. I just had the car services 5K ago and they "said" they replaced it!!

Second, I noticed a tear on a small vacum hose going into the manifold. I am going to try to take a picture to post it here.

the vac line sounds like it is def your prob. be sure to replace the filter though. id investigate to see if it was replaced by them though. hate how some dealerships give all a bad name.
