You'll know when the car doesn't start or if you're driving somewhere, it'll just shut
off the engine due to no fuel.
Cost of replacement is about $800-$900, not a cheap item to replace. I'd change the fuel filter asap, easy to do yourself. There is a good tech article here, do a search for it and you'll find it.

i had an issue where i parked my car for a few days..
and had zero boost when i got back to it. it felt like a car that had no transmission engagement, but i have a tiptronic and i knew that was not the issue. with no turbo, our cars feel like 16 wheelers. you mentioned some gradual symptoms, so clutch is definitely suspect--but your description also sounds like a no boost situation as well.
in my case, over the course of troubleshooting the problem solved itself (we think the wastegate was stuck open).
