Tutorial: Successful Virtual Cockpit update
Hi all,
I successfully updated my virtual cockpit on 2017 A4 B9 today from version 0309 to 0379. Officially, 0379 is not supported by 2017 vehicles (only 2018+) however, if you have Virtual Cockpit hardware version H17, the hardware is identical as in the 2018s and it will accept the update. By updating the VC, it finally began remembering tabs such as navigation upon vehicle shutdown, so it no longer reverts to vehicle information screen.
Please note that by following this tutorial, you are doing so at your own risk. You may permanently damage your virtual cockpit or your car and you may also void your warranty.
You will need the following pre-requisites:
- 2017 Audi A4 B9 with H17 virtual cockpit (as tested MMI version 1000+)
-Obd11 dongle
-10 credits on Obd11
-Software download for 8S0906961AL - LINK
-SD card (FAT32 format)
Notes
You can check your virtual cockpit hardware and software version by opening "dashboard" control module in OBD11.
Below is screenshoot of my VC info screen prior to update
Step 1:
a) Download the files from the link above, unzip them and copy the folder content into the designated SD card. Your SD card file tree should look like this
/SD CARD/metainfo2.txt
/SD CARD/KI_FPK_AU491
b) Place the SD card into one of the ports inside of your glove box.
Step 2:
c) Pay 10 credits to activate "green menu" application in Obd11.
d) Upon activation and with your car in ignition, hold NAV/MAP and MEDIA buttons together for 5-10 seconds until you see a red menu with the first option "UPDATE"
Apologies about the terrible image quality below, iPhone night mode kicked in for no reason.
Step 3:
e) Open "UPDATE", and select your SD card.
f) Once it loads the update from your SD card scroll to the bottom of update selections and click start. Follow the prompt on the screen until you see the screen below as the update is processing. It may take 15-20 minutes for it to complete:
Step 4:
g) After the update is done, MMI will reboot and VC will come back to life. After MMI reboots it will ask you to create a log file - skip that. MMI will reboot again.
h) update process is complete!! Your VC will now save tabs. your new software version should show as below:
Again, you are updating at your own risk and may brick your device even if you follow all instructions! Please don't do this if you don't know what you're doing and are not able to afford a replacement virtual cockpit
Good updating!!!

Is the Green Menu activation actually needed? Because that Update menu looks quite similar to the one used for Updating the maps too. It would be good to know if someone just navigated to that same Update screen, to see if the car is clever enough to recognise the type of update on the SD card and perform it.
Also is the software update linked to the hardware or the software version.
I have 8W5920790D H18 0373, so will the update take me to 0379 or will it reject it because I am on a different hardware version.

Yes you do need the green screen to update. I’ve attempted updating through the MMI interface and the update was not recognized. As far as the hardware version YMMV. This link will provide you with an update sheet for you to try to find the exact software you need.

So the spreadsheet doesn't appear to make any reference to either software or hardware version. It just shows that the last update for the VC is the link you provided.
Do you know what else had changed between versions?

No, I based my decision off of the spreadsheet and a German language forum which stated that anything above H15 with MY2017 supported the update and specifically referenced H17. If you would like to update yours you will have to make a call as H18 seems to be uncharted waters with this. I suggest that you do some more research as it could be possible that H18 is a regional and not a hardware difference which should be able to support the update. But YMMV

Other than the tab saving, what other benefits does the new software offer? Ability to keep Google Maps working?

=> VERY IMPORTANT DO NOT EXTRACT THE COMPRESSED FILE USING A MAC, BECAUSE IT WILL GENERATE HIDDEN FILES THAT MAY BRICK THE UNIT. ONLY USE WINDOWS TO EXTRACT THE FILE UPDATE INTO A SD CARD
i updated mine using this file with H18 hardware same as yours. now it became like that, all working
Code:
Address 17: Instruments (J285) Labels: Part No SW: 8W5 920 790 D HW: 8W5 920 790 D Component: FBenRDW H18 0379 Coding: 00AD40C6289800081920E9441000000000000000

You've just done what I was going to try. So thank you for confirming my suspicions.
To date, I have yet to see a single benefit of the Green Menu. I thought this was it, but then when I saw the Engineering menu being used, I wasn't convinced that the Green Menu activation was needed.
