Default DIY brake service

I'm a DIY kind of guy and one of the things I do is brake jobs.

The salesman said that they had to done at the dealership because something had to be calibrated.

What's the real story?

Sounds like hogwash. I have heard of somebody recommending you change rotors when you change pads (BMW?), but disk brakes are self adusting so what possibily would require calibration?

Perhaps someone could enlighten me if I an wrong.

I know with my wifes VW Passat changing the rear brakes would not have been easy as a DIY because of the electronic parking brake. My understanding is that it is not easy to disengage and it is much easier to take it to the dealership to do the rear brakes. Not sure if that might be the same issue here. Hopefully someone can enlighten us.

I have a brand new car. I think I'll worry about brakes after about 37,000 more miles.

I'll be in that position too. I do sometimes take the calipers apart and lube the slider bolts when I install/remove the winter wheels. I like to check everything over and get needed maintenance done before the temperature drops below freezing.
