Default sorry if this is a stupid question, how bad or good is this?

I have never serviced an auto trans before so I dont have any idea....

as far as I know this is the first fluid anf filter service on my S6 at 85K miles, fluid doesnt smell at all, feels almost watery, still red but dark... how much material is expected to be on the magnets?

is this an acceptable amount?

note, the discoloring on the side of the pan was from me having to heat one bolt to get it to pop loose.

Bill

I didn't think it looked bad, but having never done a Trans fluid service before I just wanted to make sure :-)

Nope the TC turbine vanes don't touch it's from the planetary clutch/brake plates, normal wear. Our ZF transmissions use splined plates not bands to engage the drums.

Looks fine. When I did mine last week at 79K I had about 2/3 that.

Just curious, does everyone here use the Audi specific fluid or does anyone use the Valvoline Max Life in the red bottle. My trans guy says thats what they use on them. Normally I would scoff but hes built 30 or so transmissions for my shop (few ZFs) and after a few years they are still going strong. I spoke to one of the guys at our local European shop and he said he also uses the Valvoline Max life.

What I heard on quattroworld, and this was advice from the God of rebuilding the zf transmissions over on here, was to use mobile 1 and bottle of lubeguard. Plus cutting about half an inch off the intake of the filter to prevent starving the pump in the event of any damage to the pan.
