I've been thinking lately about picking up an S8 as a new daily driver. Lots more interior room and trunk space than my current daily, an 02 Carrera.

What are the drawbacks / weak points of the D2 chassis? And specifically of the D2 S8? I heard somewhere that A8 transmissions were terrible and failed frequently, does this hold true for the S8 as well?

And advice about this specific model would be much appreciated.

I suggest some reading and searching, this question has come up before.
Yes, the transmissions are a weak point but that seems to be true for most if not all automatic-equipped cars. The A8 trans is worse in the earlier years but can still fail in the later years, just not as often or in the same way. The 2001 has a trans clutch seal that can fail more often than the 2002 or 2003 but it is possible the trans has already been rebuilt or replaced so that might not be a consideration.
