Want to retrofit W12 D3 rear camera and Headrest tvs
I came across a A8 W12 being parted out near me. i was wondering if i wanted the rear view camera fitted to my 2006 A8L will it be a easy job or a pain also what would i need to take out of the donor car (wiring wise).
Second question is for the headrests what would need to be done for them or is it a plug and play.
Thank You

Camera you need to take the licence-plate light bracket with the camera unit, the wiring of course to the camera module in the right of the trunk, then i think there is a wire to the diag-gateway behind the glovebox, then you need the diag-gateway.
Watch out with the diag gateway, if it's a 4L0 numbered, it will have component protection!
And another caution is, that if you have adaptive Cruise, you need a diag gateway with preferably G or H suffix letter (A letter 2003-06 without ACC, B = 03-06 ACC, C 2006 non-acc, D? E= 2006 ACC, F = 2007 non-acc + rearcam, G = 2007 acc+rear-cam, H = 2008 acc+rear-cam + lane assist maybe?)
So you need a gateway with atleast F suffix letter, G if you have ACC.
Headrests are plug&play, IF you talk about FRONTones without RSE. If front+RSE you need the cabling too and everything else too.

After market not so simple
Hello NYCA8L
First, tell us what year the W12 is.
Even with after market you will still need a way to have the video inputted into the MMI control head, which is not reasonably priced, and not OEM.
What you will need from the W12 is as follows, the MMI CONTROL HEAD with the green FBAS connector located behind the glove box, also to the left of said MMI CH is the CAN BUS GATEWAY, take the also, while you are in the front portion of the vehicle remove the passenger side sill plates, front and rear so that you may remove the video cable {GREEN FBAS} that runs from MMI CH to the RVC CONTROL UNIT in the trunk, now you can choose to remove said cable, or you can order one online at Kufatec Deutschland - Kabel & Fahrzeugtechnik, in the trunk you will need the RVC CONTROL UNIT, the PARK DISTANCE CONTROL UNIT, and the REAR VIEW CAMERA and it housing unit, also depending on what side of the trunk the camera wiring comes down, take that rubber conduit or both, also take all of the wiring from the RVC C U to CAMERA, and from RVC C U to body harness.
It may sound like a lot, but I did it on a weekend while adding a few other things, If you choose to do it and have questions, you can always PM me with your phone # and I will assist over the phone, or you can hire me to do the job, ONE THING TO NOTE, the MMI CONTROL HEAD may go into COMPONENT PROTECTION and will cost you in the area of $100.00 to $150.00, Cherry Hill NJ is $100.00, Princeton NJ is $130.00 +/-, I have done six in the last 2.5 years with only one ever going into protection mode, FYI protection mode is all things work, BUT NO SOUND.
THE PICTURES ARE ONLY FOR REFERANCE, NOT PART NUMBERS.
first picture "4L0 910 441 B" is the RVC Control Unit in trunk.
second pic "4L0 907468 B" is the CAN BUS in dash behind glove box.
third pic "4E0 919 283 B" is the PARK DISTANCE Unit, in trunk.
fourth pic on hardwood floor is the MMI CONTROL HEAD behind glove box.
fifth is a repeat showing where the PARK DISTANCE UNIT is located in the drivers side rear trunk.

As Johnny said. I would just add that 4E0 919 283 B Visual Park assist is nice but not absolutely necessary. Also don't forget long coaxial cable connecting Camera Module and MMI Control Head.

Buy the whole trunk lid including the camera and cables
All 06's already has xxx xxx 283 graphics display. No need to buy, it's sitting on top of the Navigation.
The differences between OEM camera and the aftermarket are:
-Better pictures at night.
-OEM uses 6V output from the RVC controller - No need to get 12V from back up light in the trunk for aftermarket camera which uses 12V and thicker cables and connectors.
-No need to replace the license bulbs to LEDS and it look ugly at night.
For OEM, make sure to get the cables from the trunk lid all the way to the RVC controller.
Make sue to get the cables from the RVC controller also: 4E0 910 441. If not, you have to make one, and it's a pain if you don't know how to solder. At least, get the connectors with wires attached to it if CUT.
Get the whole set from the car: All 3 parts mentioned above 4EO 910 441 – 4EO 035 729 “A” – 4LO 907 468 “B” or “C” or 4EO 907 468 “G” or “H”. The OEM should be 4E0 not 4L0.
With 2006, it should be plug and play with the original stuff.
Important thing is to print out all the components registered in the original 4E0 035 729 head unit and the can bus 4E0 907 468 G or H, they must match or CP will appear.
The problems with changing 4E0 035 729 is that components were burnt into Flash - If you get the one that has the same components as your car, then CP may not appear. That's why if you retrofit your original one by adding the FBAS circuits, CP never exist.
If the car is for you to check out, make sure to get everything you need and make a deal, it should be cheaper and painless on the RETROFIT.
I will not drive any car without back up camera these days, especially with the big one like A8L. My $19 camera is working extremely well even at night, rather to have the original set up from the license plate.
Cheers and good luck,
Louis

Hello All....
Please NOTE.
I stated that "THE PICTURES ARE ONLY FOR REFERENCE, NOT PART NUMBERS."
So do not go by the part number shown on the pictured parts, nor the numbers I listed, as again I only listed the numbers to coincide with the pictures so the OP would know what is what and it's function........
The OP is getting all the parts required from one W12 vehicle, so he should grab all pieces and wiring to make the setup complete and all matching as they will be removed from one and only one said W12 vehicle, same goes for the rear seat entertainment system, you should be pulling all these pieces yourself, otherwise you will not know how to install same, especially the rear DVD player setup, side note if by chance the vehicle has an OEM TV Tuner, grab that to, or purchase an old analog unit online, then with the Audi RSE system and the TV Tuner you can have all DVD player sound through the vehicles audio system instead of just headphones for the rear seat, an other bonus with the RSE and the TV tuner is that now you will have video on all three screens....
The OP has not answered what year the W12 is, nor do we know if it has ACC.
NYCA8L give us some info on the W12.

Check this out,
this guy states "From 2007 W12 audi a8 . Part of an $8000 sound system. Parting out the whole car. Have 2 cars with this bang&olufsen system. Make sure your numbers match."

Also I just spoke with this guy and he still has many parts from an A8L W12 flood car, but that should not matter for plastic pieces.
