225 45 17 tires should fit an A6 ok? It's an inch wider but the overall diameter should be the same. I think the offset moves the wheel outward but any advice would be appreciated.

the wheel bearing, which will increase the wear & tear on the wheel support assembly. You will probably also affect the alignment due to changes in the toe & camber settings (possibly the caster as well). IMHO, not worth the effort and cost for a normal over-the-road vehicle. Remember, all vehicle manufacturers spend enormous engineering time and money to provide a suspension setup that will satisfy the general requirements for ride, handling, and loads. Anytime you change anything in the suspension from the OEM design, you'll affect something, especially if you don't check all of the other settings when you change one component in the setup.

the same factory lookalike on Ebay which are 17x7.5" but a different offset (35mm) which concerns me. I love the look of my factory wheels, just intrigued by a larger wheel's appearance.

A 48 mm offset actually moves the centerline of the wheel closer to the center of the car. With the wheel moved closer to the center and a wider wheel, you run the risk of interference when the wheels are turned full lock.

17x7.5 with a 35mm offset, moving the wheels further in compared to the factory 45mm offset on my 16" wheels. Is this any better?

However, I don't think I would go any larger than this. The 42mm offset brings the wheels pretty much flush w/ the side of the car. (not really sticking out any) An upgraded suspention makes the larger wheels feel smoother and doesn.t give it a bumpy ride. The only thing I would add is lowering springs. As you can see in the pic It adds slightly to the height. And yes, I know I need to wash the car and clean my wheels. I live in the desert though and you have to wash your car about every 3 days. Since I havent driven it in a couple of months It got real dirty.

about 6oo miles of wear. It was a smoking deal for some chrome rims. Before I found them I was going to buy the set at the link below. They were $519 or so (occasionally, I saw they offer free shipping) They sell packages and other wheel sets that aren't chrome for a few hundred. Best of all they have the 35mm fac offset and all the other specs are the same as factory. (run a seller search) If your not looking for factory. Be patient and you'll come across a good deal. There is also some kind of wheel trader site and of course being in L.A. you know about craigslist. Let me take a look tomorrow and I'll see if I can dig up something for you.

Thanks. The ones I have in mind are factory lookalikes but 17 inches with 35mm offset.

it is stated on the inflation chart. Does it mean, that A6 suspention was designed to handle this particular wheels? I hope my S4 wheels with 225/45/17 tires are not far off from the OEM specs.

By in general I agree with A6Gary. Getting huge wheels actually degradates performance.
