Pirelli Winter Carving w/ Studs (Opinions? Experience??)
Hi,
The lovely New England winter will be upons us soon. I was thinking about winter tires this evening and wondering if anyone rode a set of these through a season in New England? In Massachusetts studs are legal Nov 1 -> Apr 30
I've not tried studded tires - How do they handle on days without heavy ice and snow?
TIA

Not enought patients -- Just ordered 4 Pirelli Winter Carving w/ Studs..
Just ordered 4 from TireRack - They should be shipping/leaving warehouse around the 16th of this month.
I'll check back with feedback/experience after November 1st : hopefully not before our first snow...

Studs are unnecessary. With quattro and some good quality studless winter tires you'll
be able to get through just about anything that New England winter can throw at you. Check out the attached link for some proof of what the combination can handle ( and it did so easily, I might add).
If I were you, I'd cancel your order for the Pirelli studded tires and get yourself some Dunlop Wintersport SP3s - you'll love them.

quattro + snow tires = great combo

At bit more to the "my story"
First, thanx for the feedback - nice story and pict!!!
My Story:
In late January -- I'm thinking/planning on driving cross country.
Studs and a mid-winter cross country drive seem like a good combination????

ah, some additional info. I'd probably still skip the studs, as on a cross
country trip you'll most likely be on interstates most of the way and those are generally well plowed when needed. Plus, the noise factor of studs on such a long trip would get to me.

They are a little noisy.
I had those on a 2000 Merc C280, that car really needed the extra traction. Those tires were awesome on the ice, the braking was obviously much better. If you're willing to deal with the extra noise, then go for it. I'll probably get a set of non-studded snow tires for the Gheylant, though.
